Monthly Meeting Notes – August 10, 2017

  • August 31: 6-8 PM @ The Factory Point Town Green in Manchester Center: FEDUP International Overdose Awareness Day
  • September 16: Prevent Child Abuse Vermont’s Annual WALKS and RUN FOR CHILDREN registration at 8 AM @ the Howe Center
  • September 23rd: Red Cross’ Sound the Alarm campaign comes to town
  • September 30th: Rutland Mental Health’s Recovery Rally @ BROC & Motorcycle Run
  • October 5: RCWNS Reveal Party @ 6 PM @ Tuttle Hall, CSJ
  • October 14: NeighborWorks’ 2nd Annual Fall Festival! 4-6 PM @ 113 Library Ave

New organization: PEACE (Policing Education Active Civic Engagement): “Everyone gets home safely”

Mayor Allaire:

  • Fourth meeting of the Opioid Coordination Council on Monday in Waterbury – working on recommendations to the governor; Commissioner of Corrections will be in to talk about his operations, Pre-trial Diversion and Restorative Justice
  • Naturalization ceremony at the Paramount – 70 new U.S. citizens, “honored to be a part of that and to welcome these folks to our country”

Rutland City Police Department Update:

  • 4 in Police Academy, nearing full staffing

Rutland County Women’s Network and Shelter

  • Rebranding and new name to be more inclusive
  • Join: Thursday, October 5th for reveal party, masquerade theme
  • Two open positions: advocate position and a housing equity advocate position (posted on Facebook page)

Red Cross

  • United Way and BROC are partnering on “Sound the Alarm” with the Red Cross
  • One day rally event: go around to Rutland County homes, educate families on fire safety, check fire alarms, install free smoke alarms if needed (for free)
  • Volunteer! Individual or as a group
  • Sign up your home
  • Help spread the word:

Habitat for Humanity

  • 42 Cleveland Ave build: 4 walls are up!
  • Need more volunteers around second week of September
    • Especially people that are able to lift
    • Work 9-2 Wednesdays & Saturdays

Rutland Mental Health:

  • Evergreen Substance Abuse Treatment: moving and co-locating with BROC (sometime in October)
  • Synergy!

NeighborWorks of Western Vermont

Bianca Zanella & Maggie Lambert, our superstar 2016-2017 AmeriCorps members, are completing their service terms on Friday. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!!!

Community Cupboard:

  • Needs volunteers!

Building Great Neighborhoods:

  • Water Street Park planning process: 3 neighborhood input sessions
    • NeighborWorks, Come Alive Outside, Police Department all involved and present
    • Three sessions: active vs passive, components, design; neighborhood residents were allowed to vote and add comments at every stage, more weight given to residents of Water Street
    • Final meeting in September to talk about final design, funding
  • Rutland Region Workforce Development Board
    • Working to better get out the word on what they do
    • Hiring new staff for 3 Steps Forward (program for young men with barriers to employment)
    • Sophomore Summit Career Fair at Castleton – September/October
    • Need to get out the word about everything going on…
      • Picture sharing?
      • Ron, Shannon interested in participating
    • Come Alive Outside
      • Talking with Health Department and Rec about a bike share in Rutland – trying to decide how bikes would get used, where they would be located …
        • Will send out survey asking for input

      • Youth Employment Initiative: Stacie Griffin all star community member has been hired as the youth supervisor, work opportunity will train 6 youths how to cook and bring to market prepared food
    • CCV
      • First generation college students- CCV is offering incentives: a free course & a micro scholarship
    • Board of Aldermen news:
      • Some Rutland city properties will have an application process for individuals/organizations who want to bring them back into use – get in contact with Rutland Redevelopment Agency

    • Linda Justin:
      • Family Fun Day is returning – planning meetings start Sept 22

Law Enforcement:

  • Domestic Violence Intervention initiative

Health Committee:

  • Reviewed new mission
  • Safe Station: safe place where we can get people to the services they need
    • Beth Diamond and team members are working on bringing this idea to Rutland
