Rutland City Police Department Sees an Increase in DUI Arrests in 2015

Date: May 1, 2015
Narrative:

Due to the efforts of the Officers of the Rutland City Police Department there has been an increase in Driving While Impaired arrests during the first four months of 2015 in Rutland City. Between January 1, 2015 and April 30, 2015 Officers with the Rutland City Police Dept. made 51 DUI arrests. This is a noticeable increase, as in 2014 there were 11 arrests for DUI during this same time period and 78 total DUI arrests for calendar year 2014.

Acting Chief David Covell advised the following:
“I want to commend the Officers of the Rutland City Police Department for their dedication so far this year in addressing this important public safety issue and for keeping our community safe. We often have seen the tragic consequences of DUI throughout Vermont and removing this many impaired drivers from our streets has likely saved lives and prevented harm in our community. Two of these arrests were as a result of operators colliding with RPD cruisers while on traffic stops, so our Officers have experienced firsthand the danger impaired driver’s pose on our roadways.
It is my belief that this rise in impaired driving arrests does not necessarily mean that there are more impaired drivers on our streets this year, but is the result of our Officers’ initiatives and proactive efforts. One by-product of our crime reductions strategies in Rutland City, is when we see reductions in calls for service, it allows our officers more time to engage in proactive law enforcement efforts such as DUI enforcement.”
